Pedro Zorrila, the owner of the Santurce team, had a close relationship with Horace Stoneham, owner of the Giants, then based in New York. He was not selected by the Giants, but was able to sign a contract with a minor league team in Salem, North Carolina, which later released him from his contract for below-average playing. He was eligible for parole after 20 months, but only served 10 months of his sentence. Because his father was a professional player, he was able to meet most of the famous Puerto Rican professional players of the time.
