They are professionals!In addition to enforcing all of the park rules, they provide services not unlike the city’s fire, conservancy, and animal control units, responsible for smaller fires, proper wildlife licensing, and protection for and against the animals that inhabit the park system. The Rangers are well informed in the areas of public security, horsemanship, regulations, first aid, park rules and of course directions! In 1982 the Boston Parks and Recreation Department Park Ranger Division was formed as a seasonal program. Boston’s Mounted Unit has been acknowledged throughout the country as one of the premier units for a many years now. The Friends of the Boston Park Rangers Mounted Unit would like to thank each and every one of you that has attended one of our events or made a donation to the horses and rangers.
The Park Rangers and their horses (Baron, Frederick, Liberty, Mystic and Winston) are the only security safety net in Boston’s Parks. In order to save the program and these horses, the sum of $155,000 must be presented to the City of Boston each year.

Finally, the rangers provide historical and ecological information to deepen the park patrons’ appreciation of Boston’s Emerald Necklace, in turn creating a mutual respect that improves the park system and enhances the experience of park visitors.Our goal is to work with the City and the Parks Department to increase the number of Park Rangers in the parks, so their essential work can continue on a sophisticated and yet human level.
