Anyone can comment on why the 3 band eq is more expensive that the 4 band? I have to be  careful how hard I hit them before they break up, where as I can hit the 550As really hard without any farting.Years ago (back when the covered wagons were crossing the prairie...) Sunset Sound had an API outlet upstairs. Anyone can comment on why the 3 band eq is more expensive that the 4 band? Looking at the 3 band 550a vs the 4 band 550b.

Anyone remember what version that was?The 550b sounds SLIGHTLY cleaner, somehow, than the 550a... so in some ways that difference means that it's not inreaosnable to have a preference between them, and to many people the a sounds "better".Doc, the 550-A1 has one 2520 and one IC in it. I love the 560Bs, but they and the 550A1s tend to lack the headroom of the 550As.

This would suggest that the 550a sounds "better". It provides reciprocal equalization at 15 points in 5 steps of boost divided into three overlapping ranges.

My failing memory tells me that there was a version of 550 that had at least one IC in it.

My experience with API EQ is limited to the wonderful 560.I dunno man I've got both and my opinion falls with the top feeling better on the 550 and the versatilty of the 550b.I think it's a measure of scale... API makes more 550b's than 550A's so it probably brings the 'cost per unit' down... me, I'm a 560 [graphic] fan when it comes to API EQ's so I never really studied the A vs. b thing all that closely.Are the 550Bs fully disrete like the 550As?
